What Should Your Child Wear for Navratri? A Mum’s Guide to Festive Dressing

Navratri is all about colour, celebration, music, dancing and family time. And when it comes to dressing our little ones, we want that perfect combination of festive, comfortable and child-friendly.

But with so many choices available, what should mums actually look for when choosing a Navratri outfit?

Here are 6 simple things to keep in mind before dressing your little one for the festivities.

1. Choose Fabrics That Let Them Move

Navratri isn't an occasion where children are going to sit still!

Between Garba, Dandiya, running around with cousins and simply enjoying themselves, children need outfits that allow plenty of movement.

Look for soft, breathable fabrics such as cotton, especially for celebrations in warmer parts of India.

Instead of asking only “Does this outfit look festive?”, ask:

“Can my child comfortably dance, run and play in it?”

That's when you've found the right outfit.

2. Let Colours Bring the Festive Spirit

Navratri is synonymous with colour, making it the perfect occasion to introduce children to bright and beautiful Indian colours.

Think:

🌸 Pink
💛 Yellow
💚 Green
❤️ Red
🧡 Orange
💙 Blue
🤍 White

You don't necessarily need elaborate embroidery or heavy embellishments to make an outfit look festive.

Sometimes, a beautiful colour, a lovely print and a little traditional detailing are all you need.

For younger children, cheerful colours and playful prints can make festive dressing even more fun.

3. Pick an Outfit That Matches the Occasion

Not every Navratri celebration calls for the same kind of outfit.

For a Garba or Dandiya evening, choose something that allows easy movement.

For a family puja, a kurta set, frock or traditional outfit can work beautifully.

For a school celebration, keep it festive but practical and comfortable enough for the entire day.

And if you're attending several celebrations, choose outfits that can be mixed, matched and worn again.

After all, children grow quickly—so getting more than one wear out of an outfit is always a win for Mum!

4. Don't Forget the Practical Side

Festive celebrations can mean food, outdoor play, dancing and plenty of little spills!

For younger children especially, choose outfits that are easy to care for and easy to wash.

And here's another little mum hack:

Carry a spare outfit if you're going to a long celebration with younger children.

Because no matter how carefully you dress them, there's always a good chance that the gulab jamun, chutney or juice will have other plans!

5. Let Your Child Have a Say

Perhaps the most important one.

Festive dressing should be something children look forward to, not something they have to tolerate.

Give them two or three options and let them choose:

“Do you want the yellow kurta or the green one?”

“Would you like the frock or the kurta set?”

When children get to participate in choosing their festive outfit, they are often more excited about wearing it—and you get a happy little face in all those family photographs!

The Perfect Navratri Outfit?

At Klingaru, we believe festive dressing for children doesn't have to mean choosing between beautiful and comfortable.

The best outfit is one that lets your little one look festive, feel comfortable and enjoy every moment of the celebration.

Because ultimately, Navratri isn't about keeping their clothes perfect.

It's about watching them dance, laugh, twirl and make memories. ❤️
